This template is built to pass through an ATS cleanly, no tables, no columns, no graphics, nothing that gets scrambled on the way in. That's the formatting half of the job. The other half is yours: match your skills section and summary to the actual language in the job posting before you submit. If the posting says telemetry monitoring, use that phrase, not just cardiac experience. Five minutes matching keywords to the posting will do more for your callback rate than any formatting choice, including this one.
These templates assume a continuous climb. Most real careers don't look like that, and neither move below needs to be hidden. For a gap: list it by year, not by month, and name it plainly if it's relevant, for example Family caregiving leave, 2023 to 2024. Follow it with one line on what you kept current during that time. For a specialty change: name the transition directly in your summary, and pull one bullet from your prior role that maps onto the new specialty's core skill. Let the hiring manager see the bridge instead of guessing at it.

What hospital recruiters actually want
Nurse recruiters at large hospital systems screen 200-400 new grad applications per residency cohort. They are not reading every word — they are scanning for five things in the first 10 seconds:
- RN license or NCLEX-ready status with a clear graduation date.
- BLS at minimum; ACLS/PALS if you have them.
- Clinical rotation in or near the unit they are hiring for (ICU, ED, L&D, Med-Surg, NICU, OR).
- EHR experience — Epic, Cerner, or Meditech.
- Any prior healthcare role — CNA, PCT, tech, EMT, medical assistant, scribe.
Everything else on your resume is supporting evidence. If those five things are not visible on a single-page scan, you do not get the interview — no matter how good your GPA is.
The 1-page RN resume structure
Use this exact section order for a new grad. It mirrors how recruiters scan and how Workday/Taleo parse:
- Header — Name, credentials (BSN, RN once licensed), city/state, phone, professional email, LinkedIn URL.
- Professional Summary — 2-3 lines. Target unit + key skill + one differentiator.
- Licensure & Certifications — RN (state, license #, expiration) or "NCLEX scheduled MM/YYYY", BLS, ACLS, PALS, etc.
- Education — Degree, school, graduation date, GPA if 3.5+, honors.
- Clinical Rotations — Treat each as a job. Unit, hospital, dates, hours, patient population.
- Healthcare Experience — CNA, PCT, tech, scribe, EMT, MA work.
- Skills — EHR systems, clinical skills, languages.
- Honors / Leadership / Volunteer — Only if it strengthens the application.

New grad nurse resume example — what makes this one work
The template above works because it does five specific things most new grad resumes miss:
- The summary names a target unit. "Adult ICU at [Hospital Name]" gets routed to the ICU manager. "Seeking nursing position" gets routed nowhere.
- Licensure and BLS are above the fold. A recruiter does not have to scroll to confirm you are eligible to be hired.
- Clinical rotations have hours and patient populations. "180 hrs critical care capstone" tells a hiring manager you have real ICU exposure, not a one-day observation.
- Bullets are clinical, not generic. "Titrated norepinephrine" is what they want. "Provided compassionate care" is filler.
- CNA experience is quantified. "8-10 telemetry patients per shift" + a recognition award proves you can already function in a hospital.
Writing clinical rotations as real experience
New grads under-sell rotations because they think recruiters know what a "Med-Surg rotation" includes. They do not. Write rotations the way you would write a job — unit, hospital, dates, hours, what you actually did. Use the formula:

High-value verbs: titrated, administered, assessed, documented, initiated, escalated, triaged, responded, educated, coordinated, recognized.
Skip: shadowed, observed, helped, learned about. Those words tell a recruiter you were a passenger, not a participant.
Bullet points that beat the ATS
Hospital ATSs (Workday, Taleo, iCIMS, SuccessFactors) rank you on keyword density and exact-match phrasing from the job description. Two rules:
- Mirror the job posting language. If the posting says "rhythm interpretation", write "rhythm interpretation" — not "EKG reading". If it says "patient and family education", use that exact phrase.
- Lead each bullet with a verb, end with a measurable result when possible.
Before: Helped with patient care on the unit.
After: Managed 5-patient med-surg assignment under preceptor; administered scheduled and PRN medications via Epic MAR with zero medication errors across 12-week capstone.
Nursing cover letter template (new grad)
Keep it under 250 words. Three paragraphs: why this hospital, one patient story, the ask.
Dear [Nurse Recruiter Name or Nursing Recruitment Team], I am applying for the Adult ICU Nurse Residency starting [cohort date] at [Hospital Name]. I am a May 2026 BSN graduate from Emory University with a 180-hour capstone in Emory's Medical ICU, and I am scheduled to take NCLEX in June 2026. [Hospital Name]'s reputation for nurse-led mortality reduction on the sepsis bundle is what drew me to your residency over the others I am considering. During my MICU capstone I cared for a 58-year-old post-arrest patient on targeted temperature management. Over a 12-hour shift my preceptor and I titrated norepinephrine and propofol, ran Q1H neuro checks, and recognized a downward trend in MAP that led to a fluid bolus and pressor titration before the patient decompensated. Why this works: it names a specific unit, references one thing that is true about that hospital (not generic flattery), tells one short clinical story that proves you can think like a nurse, and ends with a clear ask.
Mistakes that get nursing resumes deleted
- Two pages as a new grad. Cut it.
- An "Objective" section. Replace with a targeted Professional Summary.
- Tables, columns, headers, footers, text boxes, or graphics. ATSs strip them or scramble the parse.
- "References available upon request". Wasted line.
- A generic email address like partygrl2002@hotmail.com. Use firstname.lastname@gmail.
- One resume sent to every job. Re-tune the summary and skills section for ICU vs ED vs L&D.
- Listing every clinical rotation as one line. Expand the top 2-3 (especially capstone) with bullets; the rest can be one line each.
FAQ
How long should a new grad nursing resume be?
One page. Always.
What if I have no healthcare experience at all?
Lead with clinical rotations, certifications, and any role that proves reliability and customer-facing judgment (serving, retail management, military, teaching). Recruiters hire for trainability, not pedigree.
Should I list my GPA?
Yes if 3.5 or higher. Otherwise leave it off.
How do I list "NCLEX pending"?
Under Licensure: "Registered Nurse — NCLEX-RN scheduled for [Month YYYY]" and add your ATT-eligible date if you have it.
What file format should I submit?
PDF when the application allows it (preserves formatting). Word .docx if the ATS specifies it. Never .pages, .rtf, or a Google Drive link.
